“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
