Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
