Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated he believed he had edged the ball when he was reprieved on review on day one of the 3rd Ashes Test against England.
Having been given a life on 72, Carey proceeded to score a fine 106 to help the Australians finish on 326-8 at the end of play in the Adelaide Oval.
The Incident
Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey went for a cut shot to the bowling of Josh Tongue.
The England team appealed confidently, certain they had detected an nick, but umpire Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.
After captain Ben Stokes challenged the on-field call, the technology examined by third umpire Chris Gaffaney showed a significant spike however this came prior to the ball had reached the bat.
Gaffaney added he believed there was a gap between the bat and the ball.
Therefore, Carey was given not out.
"There was a sound, I thought I'd nicked it," said Carey.
"If I was given out I think I would have reviewed it, probably not confidently. There was a definite noise."
Controversial 'Snicko'
There has been debate about 'Snicko'' during the series after a series of dubious incidents.
England's bowling coach David Saker suggested England may pursue this most recent incident further with the match official Jeff Crowe.
"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker remarked.
"We've had doubts about it throughout. It's disappointing that this is a post-play discussion. That's the situation."
Emotional Century
His hundred was his first in the Ashes.
It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose dad died in recent months. His spouse was in tears in the crowd as the batter marked the occasion by looking to the skies.
"Scoring a century at home with family watching was incredible," stated Carey.
"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. It's hard not to get emotional. But, no, it was great."
Not New to Furore
This isn't Carey's first brush with Ashes drama.
He was the keeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 Ashes series, resulting in a heated final day.
Speaking about his survival he added: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."
"I might have gotten away with one."
