Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
